What is Health Anxiety?
Health Anxiety is an anxiety disorder that is very similar to OCD and is characterised by intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours (compulsions). People who develop health anxiety (also known as hypochondria) is characterised by a fear of serious illness, even when there’s no medical evidence to support this.
The physical symptoms of anxiety such as rapid heart rate, headaches, chest pain and shortness of breath compound the problem, and often people experiencing health anxiety mistake it for a physical illness. While there’s no immediate risk, people who suffer from health anxiety may find their condition extremely draining. If you’re constantly worrying about your health and are experiencing any of the above symptoms, then it’s important to seek help.
One option to consider is hypnotherapy.
Hypnotherapy is widely regarded as a positive way to treat anxiety disorders. In fact, medical professionals now recommend hypnotherapy for health anxiety in cases where CBT alone is not working as well as expected.
How does hypnotherapy work?
Hypnosis works by using a range of relaxation techniques to access the subconscious mind, where our habits, behaviours, and emotions are controlled. The therapist will guide you into a state of deep relaxation and then make suggestions designed to help you change how you think and behave. These suggestions can be about anything that will help you overcome your health anxiety, such as changing how you feel about your obsessions or breaking the cycle of compulsions.
Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy can be an effective tool in treating obsessive-compulsive disorder because it can help to:
- Break the cycle of OCD thoughts and behaviours
- Reduce anxiety and stress
- Build confidence and self-esteem
- Increase motivation to change
- Teach new, more helpful ways of thinking and behaving
